SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team (4-1-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) plays the first two games of its four-game road trip this weekend when it travels to Providence to face the Friars on Friday, Sept. 23 at 4:00 p.m. From there SU heads to Storrs, Conn. to take on No. 12 Connecticut (4-0-2, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 p.m.
It is the first road trip for the Orange this year after it started the season with a six-match homestand. The Orange slipped to fifth in the most recent New York State regional poll after going 0-1-1 in first two BIG EAST matches. SU played Marquette to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 16 and nearly upset No. 16 Notre Dame, playing the Fighting Irish evenly the entire match before succumbing, 1-0.
Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley is SU's leading scorer with three goals on the season. He tallied the Orange's only goal in its BIG EAST opener versus Marquette on Sept. 16. Sophomore Isaac Collings has five points for the Orange and leads the club with three assists.
Freshman keeper Robert Cavicchia’s has only allowed two goals this season and he is sporting a 0.34 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage on the season. Cavicchia ranks 11th and 10th in the nation, respectively, in those two categories.
For the first time since 1972, Providence enters the match unbeaten through its first six contests with a record of 2-0-4. Its two victories came against Maine in its 2005 season opener and Sacred Heart.
Friars’ keeper Chris Konopka was named the ECAC Division I and BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, for his performance in ties versus Louisville and Cincinnati last week. He leads the conference in saves with 35 and ranks third in the league in goals-against average at 0.58.
Eoin Lynch is the Friars’ top offensive threat. He has four goals and one assist on the season for a total of nine points. Lynch is tied for third in the league in goals scored and tied for fifth in points.
The Orange is 14-7 overall against the Friars, including a 1-0 win at the SU Soccer Stadium last season. Senior Ezra Prendergast netted the game-winner versus Providence last year to record the first points of his career.
Connecticut entered last weekend No. 1 in the Soccer America top 25 poll before losing back-to-back BIG EAST games to Cincinnati and Louisville. They enter this weekend’s matches ranked 12th in the NSCAA/adidas rankings. The Huskies will host No. 8 St. John’s on Friday, Sept. 23 before taking on the Orange on Sunday.
Sophomores Chukwudi Chijindu and Ryan Cordeiro lead the Huskies in points and goals scored with five and two, respectively. Cordeiro is tied for first in the BIG EAST with two game-winning goals. Senior goalkeeper Adam Schuerman’s three shutouts are tied for second in the league.
The Orange is 10-17-3 overall against Connecticut, but has beaten the Huskies twice in the last five years when the Huskies have entered the match ranked in the Top 25. Syracuse handed No. 22 Connecticut a 2-1 loss at the SU Soccer Stadium on Oct. 16, 2003 and also defeated the Huskies when they were the top-ranked team in the nation during the 2000 season, recording a 1-0 triumph on Oct. 14, 2000.
