SU Men's Soccer Loses To No. 12 Connecticut, 1-0
9/25/2005 6:08:48 PM | Men's Soccer
STORRS, Conn. – The Orange (4-3-1, 0-3-1 BIG EAST) held its own versus No. 12 Connecticut, holding the edge in corner kicks, 7-3, and matching the Huskies (5-2-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) with seven shot attempts for the match, but lost by the score of 1-0 at Morrone Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 25.
Syracuse outshot the Huskies 5-2 in the second half and registered seven corners after halftime to Connecticut’s one. Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) paced the Orange offense with two shots. Freshman Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) started his eighth straight match and played 90 minutes in goal.
The Huskies notched the only goal of the match at the 19:52 mark. Ryan Cordeiro dribbled through the box and fired a shot to the low left corner of the SU net for what proved to be the game-winner. The Huskies’ Drew Brown and Dori Arad earned assists on the play.
Syracuse had a couple of opportunities to square the contest in the second half, but could not convert. Rowley sent a ball into the box that was grabbed by Connecticut keeper Adam Schuerman, but he bobbled and put it back into play. The Huskies’ keeper regained control without giving up a shot, however. Approximately five minutes later, early in the 68th minute of action, Pat Gallagher (St. Louis, Mo.) sent a header into the crossbar for one of the Orange’s closest scoring attempts of the contest.
Arad led Connecticut with three shots and Schuerman made three saves to pick up the shutout.
The Orange continues its road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when it plays at New York region foe Hartwick. The match is slated to kick off at 7:00 p.m.
