Cavicchia Earns Fourth Shutout In Scoreless Draw Versus Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Syracuse goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) earned his fourth shutout of the season playing all 110 minutes in the Orange’s, 0-0, double-overtime tie versus New York region rival Hartwick on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Elmore Field. The draw ends SU’s three-match losing streak and breaks its two-game losing skid versus the Hawks.
Cavicchia finished with six saves in the contest, two short of his career high. He now has 31 saves on the season.
The match was the first scoreless tie for the Orange since Oct. 10, 2003 when SU and West Virginia played 110 minutes without a goal.
The opening 45 minutes of Wednesday’s contest featured several offensive chances for both teams. SU’s first opportunity to get on the scoreboard came in the fourth minute, but sophomore James Goodwin’s (Merrimack, N.H.) header was deflected over the end line by the Hartwick defense. The Hawks’ offense responded with a scoring chance approximately two minutes later, but Chris Potter’s free kick was stopped by Cavicchia and he cleared the rebound. Hartwick had another opportunity in the 16th minute, but Aaron Chibli couldn’t handle a cross in front of the net and the Orange gained possession.
Syracuse (4-3-2) thought they had the first goal of the match in the 34th minute when sophomore Justin Van Houten (Highland, N.Y.) launched a shot from 30 yards out that Hartwick keeper Josh Wagenaar deflected off the crossbar. The ball dropped straight down without crossing the goal line and Wagenaar smothered it before SU could get off another shot.
Cavicchia came up big for the Orange in the final 20 minutes of the second half. With 15:30 to go in regulation, he fell to his knees to eat up a shot by Chris Jackson from the right side of the box to keep the Hawks (5-3-1) off the scoreboard. A little over two minutes later, Cavicchia made another save, this time on Potter from 12 yards away, to keep the game scoreless.
In the 89th minute the Orange almost tallied the golden goal when a free kick by Cavicchia landed at the feet of freshman Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) in the box. Schomaker’s shot was deflected into the air and headed by sophomore Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia) toward the net, but it was batted away by Wagenaar at the goal line.
Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) continued the assault on the Hartwick net in the first overtime, ripping a shot from the top of the circle that Wagenaar dived to get a hand on. The Orange controlled the action in the first extra session and earned three corner kicks.
SU continued the offensive pressure in the 109th minute, but Isaac Collings’ (Oriskany, N.Y.) header was deflected wide. Hartwick countered with 20 seconds remaining in the period, but the Hawks were offside on their final offensive chance.
Sophomore defender Edvin Hot (New York, N.Y.) made his first start of the season in the contest and senior Mike McCallion (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and Rowley paced the Orange with two shots each.
Wagenaar made five saves for Hartwick and Austin McCann and John Paul Boyle each took two shots for the hosts.
The Orange return to conference action on Saturday, Sept. 1 when it plays at BIG EAST newcomer DePaul. It will be the first meeting between the two schools, and kickoff for the match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
