SYRACUSE, N.Y.- SU earned another point in the BIG EAST Conference standings by tying Villanova, 1-1, Friday night. The Orange, who tied for the fourth straight game, relied on a strong defensive effort most notably from goaltender Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio) who made nine saves in the game including a key save in the first overtime period.
The Orange got on the board first when Amanda Arcuri (New City, N.Y.) lofted a shot over Villanova goaltender Jillian Loyden in the 40th minute. Lauren Jentzen (Marshfield, Mass) assisted on the goal. The goal was the first of Arcuri's career. SU was out shot 7-2 in the first half of play, however held on to a 1-0 lead into the break.
Villanova came out firing in the second half evening the score at 1-1 when Erin Hardiman scored an unassisted goal. Hardiman was able to head in a loose ball into the right side of the goal. Villanova out shot Syracuse, 8-3, in the second half managing just one goal.
Both teams would have scoring opportunities in the first overtime period with Kowalczyk making one of her biggest saves of the night with just over five minutes remaining in the first extra period.
In the final overtime, SU would fire the periods only shot, however it would not be on goal as time expired with the two teams deadlocked in a 1-1 tie.
Syracuse moves to 2-5-4, 1-0-3 in the BIG EAST, after getting a school record fourth consecutive tie dating back to when it tied Colgate 0-0, Sept. 21. Villanova moves to 6-3-3.
SU will next be in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when Georgetown visits the SU Soccer Stadium.
