SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse freshman goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia pitched his third-consecutive shutout and assisted on the match-winning goal to lift the men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory against Cornell at the SU Soccer Stadium. It marked the first time in school history that the men’s soccer team opened the year with three-straight shutouts.
Cavicchia stopped eight shots in the win and assisted on the first goal of the night. In the 17th minute, Cavicchia took a free kick and drove it the length of the pitch. Freshman forward Spencer Schomaker let the ball hit the ground, and then jumped to meet the ball and shot it over Big Red goalkeeper Steve Lesser for the first goal of his career. It was the third-straight match that SU capitalized on a free kick off an opponent foul.
The Orange struck again in the 54th minute off a corner kick. Senior captain Mike McCallion took the kick, and redshirt freshman Pete Rowley got possession of the ball after a Cornell defender hit it, and slipped a shot past the goalkeeper to seal the win.
The Big Red’s best chance to score came in the first half. A cross was redirected towards the goal, but Cavicchia pushed the shot over the net to preserve the shutout. SU has now held opponents scoreless for a total time of 282:52.
The third-consecutive win is the first time SU has opened a season 3-0 since 1995.
Syracuse is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 11, when it hosts Adelphi at the SU Soccer Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
