
Field Hockey Hosts Kent in Sept. 9 Home Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse plays its first home game of the 2005 season on Sept. 9, when Kent State visits the new AstroTurf at Coyne Field. The Orange is 1-2 on the season after playing three games in four days out in California. SU lost a 4-0 decision to Pacific in its first game, then bounced back to defeat Stanford two days later in overtime by a score of 3-2. The very next day, Syracuse lost to California, 3-1.
Kent State will be looking for its first victory of the 2005 season. The Golden Flashes are 0-3. They lost a 3-0 decision to James Madison on Aug. 27, a 2-1 contest at Dartmouth on Sept. 3, and a 3-2 outcome at Boston College on Sept. 4.
SERIES WITH KENT
This will be the fourth meeting between Syracuse and Kent State on the field hockey field, but the first since 2003. Syracuse owns a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series. The first meeting was a 3-2 Syracuse victory in double overtime at Kent during the 1989 season. In 1999, the Orange defeated the Golden Flashes, 5-0. In the first game of the 2003 season, SU lost a 1-0 decision in Ohio.
SYRACUSE NEWS AND NOTES ...
Senior forward Paige Sullivan scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Syracuse to a 3-2 victory at Stanford. It marked Sullivan’s 10th career goal, her first this year.
Freshman Heather Hess made her first collegiate start in goal for the Orange against Stanford. She faced 19 shots in 76 minutes of action, recorded six saves, including one in overtime to help preserve the win, and allowed two goals. Marie O’Brien started in goal against Pacific. Hess played the second half against the Tigers.
Both Sullivan and Hess were named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Sept. 5.
Junior forwards Meg Ryan and Ashley Fry scored for SU against Stanford. Ryan notched the Orange’s first goal of the year at 24:55 of the first half. Fry scored off a penalty stroke.
In the game against Cal, Fry notched her second goal of the season late in the second half. It was the eighth goal of her career. Hess played all 70 minutes against the Bears and finished with eight saves.
