CANTON, Ohio, Jan. 11, 2006 – Former Syracuse football standout Art Monk was named a finalist for the 2006 NFL Hall of Fame class. Monk was a three-time Pro Bowler in the NFL and won two Super Bowls in his 16-year career. The class of 2006 will be announced on Saturday, Feb. 4, the day before Super Bowl XL.
Other finalists for this year’s class include Troy Aikman, Thurman Thomas, Warren Moon, Michael Irvin, John Madden, and the late Reggie White. A 39-member panel will vote who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. A player must get at least 80 percent of the vote to be elected into the Hall. A minimum of three players and a maximum of six are inducted each year. If fewer than three players get 80 percent of the vote, then the next player with the highest percentage is elected in.
Monk participated in three Super Bowls with the Washington Redskins and won two. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection. He finished his 16-year NFL career with 12,721 receiving yards on 940 catches. He had a 13.5 average and totaled 68 touchdowns.
At SU, Monk holds the single-game record for receptions in a game with 14, which he accomplished against Navy in 1979. He is tied for sixth all-time at SU in career receptions with 102. Monk’s 1,644 career receiving yards is seventh in school history, while his 47.0 yards per game average ranks ninth all-time.
