San Juan, Puerto Rico- The Syracuse men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recently returned from their winter trip to Puerto Rico where they competed in the 2nd Annual Copa Coqui Invitational on Jan. 3. Sophomore Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) highlighted the event for the Orange by capturing first place in the 200-individual medley. Junior Luke Boral (Poznan, Poland) was the men’s high finisher, taking second in the 100-breaststroke. No team scoring was kept at the competition.

Senior Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) took fourth in the 100-baskstroke in a time of 1:02.69, while senior Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.) placed fifth in the 200-free in a time of 2:02.91. Freshman Peter Gollands (Chelmsford, Mass.) turned in a top 10 performance in the 100-butterfly, finishing in a time of 1:01.94.
Senior Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) swam to a fourth place finish in the 200-freestyle in a time of 2:11.91, while junior Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic) earned a fourth place result in the 100-butterfly with a time of 1:07.24. Senior Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) also had a strong performance in the 100-fly placing seventh with a time of 1:08.56.
In the 100-breastsrtoke, junior Anette Hoye (Elverum, Norway) and Sophomore Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Freshman Catrina Roth (Aurora, Ill.) finished eighth in the 100-backstroke with a time of 1:10.59.
Both the SU men’s (1-1, 0-1 BIG EAST) and women’s (0-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) teams will be in action on Saturday (Jan. 14) as they resume BIG EAST competition when West Virginia comes to the Webster Pool. Diving competition will begin at 9 a.m. with swimming set for 12 p.m.
