Orange Men and Women Lose at UConn

STORRS, CONN.- Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams lost to Connecticut on Saturday, with the men losing 182-118, while the women dropped a 179-120 decision. Senior Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) and junior Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) highlighted the day for the Orange as Persico finished first in both the 100-backstroke (51.92) and the 200-backstroke (1:53.40), while Boral was victorious in the 100-breaststroke (56.84) and the 200-breastroke (2:02.26).
Boral set a new Wolff-Zackin Natatorium record in the 200-breast, ousting the previous best mark of 2:03.75, which stood for 10 years.
The Orange got a win from freshman Matt Gerlach (Franklin Square, N.Y.) in the 1,000-freestyle, finishing the race in 9:47.86, just ahead of teammate senior Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.) who took second in 9:53.31. Mugavin went on to take second in the 500-freestyle later in the day, swimming the race in 4:42.41.
Junior West Matson (Wichita, Kan.) finished second in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:44.18. Other second place finishers for SU were senior Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M.) in the 100-backstroke, senior Gustavo Araujo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 200-butterfly, senior Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y.) in the 100-freestyle and freshman Peter Gollands (Chelmsford, Mass.) in the 100-butterfly.
On the women’s side, sophomore Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) led the way, winning the 200-butterfly in a time of 2:04.75 before taking second in the 200-individual medley. Junior Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic) won the 100-butterfly. Freshman Catrina Roth (Aurora, Ill.) continued her streak of success in the 100-backstroke by placing second in a time of 59.40.
Sophomore Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla.) finished second in the 100-breaststroke, while senior Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) came in second in the 50-freestyle, 100-freestyle and the 100-butterfly. Freshman Dani Stein (Boylston Lake, N.Y.) had a second place performance in the 200-breaststroke.
In diving action, sophomore Tory McKenna (Westford, Mass.) took first on the one-meter board and third on the three-meter.
The men’s squad is now 1-3 (0-3 BIG EAST), while the women are 0-4 (0-3 BIG EAST). The two teams will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they travel to take on Seton Hall.
