1/17/2006 11:54:11 AM | Men's Basketball, Dome 25
The Syracuse men's and women's basketball teams have combined for a perfect 3-0 record in games played in the Carrier Dome on this date during the past 25 years. The men's squad is 2-0 while the women's team is 1-0.
Most recently the men's team hosted BIG EAST rival St. John's in 1995. The Red Storm scored the first basket of the game for its only lead of the game as Lawrence Moten quickly answered with a three-pointer, giving the Orange the lead for good as it went on to a 91-87 victory. Syracuse maintained a double-digit lead for much of the game, but St. John's rallied and cut the lead to three with a minute left to play. SU was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 39 seconds to secure the victory. The win was SU's 13th straight as it climbed to a No. 6 ranking in the national polls. John Wallace led the Orange with 24 points, while Felipe Lopez led St. John's with a game-high 35 points.
Syracuse's game against Georgetown in 1982 was another highly-contested contest typical of the series between the two rivals. The game featured nine ties and 16 lead changes. Syracuse took the lead for good on Gene Waldron's layout with 4:35 left in the game. The Orange was 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the victory. Erich Santifer led SU with 19 points while Tony Bruin added 17 points.
The Orange women's basketball team won its only game played in the Carrier Dome on this date, defeating Rhode Island, 73-68, in 1981.
