SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse softball coach Mary Jo Firnbach announced that Rachel Tilford (Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, Canada) has joined the Orange for the 2006 season. Tilford comes to SU after spending one season at Galveston College in Texas.
Tilford, who will compete for time in the SU outfield, was a Region XIV All-Star and earned second-team all-region honors in 2005. She was also named a 2005 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American Scholar-Athlete.
“Rachel fills some holes for us,” Firnbach said. “She comes in as a sophomore and has college game experience. She’s very athletic and versatile.”
Prior to attending Galveston, Tilford competed scholastically at Birch Hills High School in Saskatchewan. She helped lead the squad to five provincial championships and was selected as the school’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2003 and 2004.
The Orange softball squad began spring workouts on Tuesday, Jan. 17 and will begin the 2006 campaign at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. SU will play five games at the tournament, all against teams that reached the NCAA Regionals in 2005, including contests versus two past national champions (Texas A&M, Cal State Fullerton).
