NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Former Syracuse football standout Tebucky Jones will be inducted into the New Britain Sports Hall of Fame on March 23. Jones starred as a defensive back in his senior season at SU and has spent eight seasons in the National Football League.
Jones, a New Britain, Conn. native, will be inducted on March 23 at St. George Church Social Center. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at Jimmy’s Smoke Shop, Marzi Florist, and from members of the Hall of Fame committee.
At SU, Jones holds a couple of top 10 performances. He ranks fourth in interception return yards in a game with 98 against Tulane in 1997. Jones was a running back in his first three years on The Hill. For his career, he recorded 496 yards and nine touchdowns on 128 carries. In his move to safety in 1997, Jones became a first team All-ECAC and second team All-BIG EAST performer. He finished second on the team with four interceptions and fourth on the team in tackles with 72.
Jones also served as a kick returner in 1994 and 1995. He brought back nine kickoffs in his career for 176 yards, an average of 19.6.
In 1997, Jones was the first student-athlete since Ernie Davis in 1961 to score touchdowns on both offense and defense.
Jones was a first round draft pick in the NFL in 1998, taken 22nd overall by the New England Patriots. He spent five seasons in Foxboro before being traded to New Orleans for the 2003 season. After two seasons with the Saints, Jones joined the Miami Dolphins in 2005.
He has compiled 444 tackles in eight years, with his highest season total coming in 2004 with New Orleans. He totaled 101 tackles that year. Jones also has 4.5 sacks to his credit, including two this past season. He has picked off six passes in his career.
This season, Jones’ season was shortened due to a chest injury. He finished with 39 tackles, including 24 solo, and two sacks.
