PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse women’s lacrosse team, ranked No. 14 by Lacrosse Magazine, has been picked to finish second in the BIG EAST in 2006, announced today by the conference office. The Orange totaled 20 points in the preseason voting and received one first place vote. Defending BIG EAST champion and 10th-ranked Georgetown was selected to finish first with 25 points while receiving the other five first place votes. Seniors Caitlyn Dragon, Meghan O’Connell, and junior Jill DePetris were each named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
No. 15 Loyola, which was added as an associate member of the BIG EAST this season, finished third in the voting with 17 points. Connecticut and Notre Dame tied for fourth with 10 points apiece, while Rutgers rounded out the voting with eight points.
SU finished the 2005 season with a 12-5 overall record and a 4-1 mark in conference play. The Orange earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Championship, but was edged by Dartmouth, 9-8, in the first round in Hanover, N.H.
Georgetown is undefeated in BIG EAST play (29-0) since the conference began sponsoring the sport in 2001. Last season, the Hoyas lost to Dartmouth in the second round of the NCAA Championship, 13-3.
Syracuse’s three selections to the All-BIG EAST Team are the most for a team with Georgetown. The Hoyas put three on the team and gained Preseason Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Coco Stanwick was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, while Chloe Asselin earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Dragon, O’Connell, and DePetris all earned BIG EAST postseason honors in 2005. Dragon was a unanimous First Team honoree, while O’Connell and DePetris were named to the Second Team.
Dragon, one of seven unanimous choices to the preseason team, led the Orange in points last season with 55 (40 goals, 15 assists). She enters her final season ranked 10th all-time in career assists (15) and points (62). Dragon also scooped up 22 ground balls in 2005.
O’Connell finished third on the team in goals last year with 32 while adding a pair of assists. She also accumulated 29 ground balls, 23 draw controls, and 14 caused turnovers.
DePetris was one of six Orange student-athletes to start and play in all 17 games. She finished the season with 25 points (18 goals, seven assists), a team-leading 36 ground balls, 22 draw controls, and 14 caused turnovers.
SU opens the 2006 slate on Saturday, Feb. 25 when it hosts Harvard in the Carrier Dome.
