SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Tracy Harbut (Lexington, Ky.) notched a career-high 24 points as Syracuse (7-6, 0-2 BIG EAST) lost to visiting Louisville, 90-73, in its BIG EAST home opener on Tuesday, Jan. 3 in the Carrier Dome. It was the first-ever BIG EAST game for Louisville. Harbut’s 12 converted free throws are tied for the fifth-most in a single game at SU.
Harbut went 6-15 from the floor and 12-15 from the foul line, both career highs from the charity stripe. Harbut’s 12 points from the foul line is tied with Vera Jones who hit 12 in 1987, while Kim Dick did it in 1982. Harbut also dished out six assists in the game. Freshman Jenny Eckhart (Libertyville, Ill.) added 14 points for the Orange with a perfect night on the floor. She was 5-for-5, including 3-for-3 from 3-point land. Freshman Brittany Smith (Milwaukee, Wisc.) chipped in with 11 points.
Freshman Lina Lisnere (Riga, Latvia) saw her first action since Dec. 8, playing 16 minutes and scoring nine points. She hit her first two 3-pointers of the season in the game. The Orange drilled a season-best seven 3-pointers in the contest.
The Cardinals used excellent 3-point shooting to capture the win in its first-ever BIG EAST game. Coming into tonight’s contest, Louisville was shooting 29.8 percent from beyond the arc. Against the Orange tonight, the Cardinals went 12-21, a 57.1 percentage. It was the most treys for Louisville in a game this season, two short of the Louisville record, and the most allowed by the Orange through its first 13 contests.
The two teams started the game even, tied 12-12 five minutes into the game. Smith sparked SU in the early going, scoring the first five Orange points, and seven of the first 10. The Cardinals jumped out to a 10-point lead, 33-23, with a 15-7 scoring stretch with five minutes left in the opening frame. Down 35-26, the Orange closed to within three, 35-32, with six unanswered points. Harbut scored four of the points, while sophomore Amanda Adamson (Littleton, Colo.) added the other basket after forcing a turnover at midcourt. Louisville stretched its lead to 45-39 before the half.
Louisville had nine different players score before the halfway point of the half, and finished the game with 10 different scorers.
The Cardinals began the second half with an 11-4 run to extend its lead to 56-43. Katie Olson and Missy Taylor both drained 3-pointers in that span, while Jessica Huggins converted three free throws after being fouled behind the arc. The opening run proved to be enough, as SU only got as close as eight down the stretch.
The Orange finished the game shooting 48.1 percent, while Louisville shot 52.5 percent from the field.
For Louisville (10-2, 1-0 BIG EAST), Connie Neal was 6-for-11 from beyond the arc and finished with 18 points. Missy Taylor recorded a team-high 20 points and grabbed nine boards. Jazz Covington notched 16 points and Katie Olson chipped in with 10.
SU returns to the Dome on Saturday, Jan. 7, when it hosts West Virginia in a 7:00 p.m. BIG EAST battle.
