SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) and the Syracuse University field hockey team converted on two penalty corners in a 2-1 victory of Albany on Wednesday night at a blustery Coyne Field. With the win the Orange improves to 8-7 overall while the Great Danes move to 10-4.
“If we can get corners Sola is quite a weapon,” said head coach Kathleen Parker. “It was nice to see her score. She was really striking the ball well in warm-up. I saw that so we just went with her on our penalty corners and she executed.”
The Orange scored the game’s first two goals on very similar plays. On SU’s first goal senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) initiated the penalty corner by passing the ball to senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) who fed it to Sola who in turn scored.
The game-winning goal came on a very similar looking play when with Sola firing from the top of the circle. Only this time sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) tipped the ball past Albany keeper Ashley Ross.
Albany received a late goal from Michele Polizois, but SU was able to hold off any possible Great Dane comeback.
Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) recorded four saves for SU and Ross made four.
The Orange outshot the Great Danes, 9-6.
Up next, Syracuse returns to BIG EAST Conference play when the Orange hosts No. 14 Providence at Coyne Field on Friday, October 13 at 7 p.m.
