SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Providence’s Melissa McGow tallied two assists as No. 14 Providence handed the Syracuse University field hockey team a 2-0 shutout loss tonight at Coyne Field in SU’s home finale. With the loss the Orange move to 8-8 overall and 2-3 in the BIG EAST Conference while the Friars improve to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the BIG EAST.
“They played a very good zone defense in the scoring area,” said head coach Kathleen Parker. “We rushed our shots on cage and their goalkeeper did a good job when we did get balls on cage.”
Syracuse outshot Providence, 10-6, and held a 4-2 advantage on penalty corners.
An Orange break down defensively led to the Friars first goal when McGow found Nellie Poulin unmarked right in front of SU sophomore keeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.). Poulin put the ball past Hess to give Providence a 1-0 at 14:48.
McGow also provided the assist on PC’s second goal, finding Emily Ewens deep in the scoring circle at 38:58.
Hess recorded three saves for SU and Rachel Chamberlain made six saves in the shutout win for PC.
Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa.), Marie O’Brien (Burlington, Ontario), Meg Ricker (Palmyra, Pa.), Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.), Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.), Megan Stuart (New Holland, Pa.) and Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) were honored before the game.
Up next, Syracuse travels to Connecticut for its final BIG EAST Conference game of the year against the No. 9 Huskies on Saturday, October 21 at 1 p.m.
