UConn Eliminates Field Hockey From Playoff Contention

STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) recorded a career-high 17 saves, but it was not enough at the Syracuse University field hockey team was shutout, 3-0, at No. 9 Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The loss eliminates the Orange from postseason contention. Lauren Aird scored twice to for the Huskies.
The Orange moves to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the BIG EAST Conference, while UConn improves to 16-2 overall and 3-1 in the league. The shutout marks UConn's eighth this season and its seventh during its current 11-game winning streak.
“Heather Hess played her best game of the season,” said head coach Kathleen Parker. “She was aggressive and made some really nice saves during the second half.”
UConn’s Jennifer Kleinhans opened the scoring off a penalty corner with help from Meagan Hoffman and Meghan Wheeler at the 17:33 mark of the first half.
Aird banged in the first of her two goals at the 2:41 mark in the first half off a rebound in front of the net to increase the margin to 2-0.
Aird capped the scoring with her second goal of the game and her 16th of the season off a feed from Kristin Galuski at the 14:58 mark in the second half.
Huskies goalkeeper Briana Koza made three saves en route to her third shutout of the season as the Huskies out-shot the Orange 29-5. The Huskies attempted nine penalty corners to the two attempted by the Orange.
