Volleyball Defeats Rutgers

New Brunswick, N.J. – Syracuse ended a two-match losing streak, sweeping Rutgers 3-0 (30-19, 30-18, 30-15). Syracuse improved to 11-20 and 5-6 in BIG EAST play, gaining ground for the final spot in the BIG EAST Championship. Villanova (6-5 BIG EAST) and South Florida (6-4 BIG EAST) both lost on Sunday.
Syracuse held Rutgers to 52 total points, the fewest allowed by SU since the Orange defeated Delaware St. last season. The Orange also allowed 52 points against the Lady Hornets winning 30-21,30-19, 30-12. The last time that Syracuse allowed fewer than 52 points was against Providence in 2002. The Orange defeated the Friars 30-10, 30-6, 30-8, allowing only 24 points.
Freshman Kacie MacTavish led the team with 10 kills and added six digs. Freshman Sarah Morton and senior Erin McQuillin both added seven kills for the Orange. Morton also led the team with six blocks, including four solo blocks. Sophomore April Quigley and freshman Samantha Ainsworth recorded a team-best 16 assists and junior Joscie Kaup led the team with 15 digs.
Syracuse started quickly, scoring the game’s first eight points and never looking back en route to the first-game victory. With the second game tied at six, Syracuse scored nine of the game’s next 10 points to take a 2-0 advantage. Syracuse scored eight-straight points early in the third game and used a six-point run later in the game to seal the match.
The Orange will look to continue its winning ways in the BIG EAST next weekend, hosting St. John’s on Friday and Connecticut on Sunday.
