SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) recorded four saves as the Syracuse University field hockey team shutout Colgate, 2-0, on Tuesday night at Coyne Field. SU’s third consecutive win improves to the Orange to 7-6 overall, while the Raider move to 2-8.
“We are still working on our zone, but I thought we still gave up too many corners,” SU head coach Kathleen Parker said. “We need to sure up that aspect of our defense because our next three games are against stiff competition.”
Once again it was sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) who sparked the Syracuse offense in the first half. Babbitt scored her team-best ninth goal of the season on a breakaway at 24:47. Senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) provided the brilliant pass. The sophomore has scored six goals in SU’s last four games.
SU dominated the first stanza, outshooting Colgate, 12-2.
Things were a little more even in the second half, but the Orange did receive an insurance goal from senior forward Megan Stuart (New Holland, Pa.) at 63:59. Stuart scored off a rebound from a Babbitt shot.
Syracuse, led by Stuart’s eight and Babbitt’s and Michelle Sola’s (Blandon, Pa.) seven ended the game with a 26-10 shot advantage.
Fourteen of SU’s 26 were on goal as Jacque DeMarco made 14 saves for the Raiders.
Up next, the Orange return to BIG EAST play and travel to 16th-ranked Villanova on Friday, October 6 at 7 p.m.
