VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Syracuse University field hockey team (7-7, 2-2) was defeated by No. 16 Villanova (11-3, 3-0), 1-0, on Friday night in BIG EAST Conference action at Villanova Stadium.
“We played really tough,” said Associate Head Coach Mary McCracken. “It was a good game and we had some opportunities, but just could not finish. Besides the one breakaway where they scored out defense was solid.”
Both teams played well in the first half, with Syracuse outshooting the 'Cats 8-6, but neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. The second half started out with Villanova on the attack. Then, in the 58th minute, Villanova’s Emily Donaldson was able to put home the rebound off the shot from Allison Boris to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse would not go quietly, as the Orange mounted numerous charges late in the game, but Wildcat goalkeeper Alex Whalen was up to the task making four saves for her second consecutive shutout.
Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) recorded six saves for SU.
Up next, Syracuse returns to the friendly confines of Coyne Field to host Albany on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 p.m.
