Field Hockey Travels to Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Syracuse University field hockey team travels to Villanova on Friday, October 6 at 7 p.m. The Orange, riding a three-game winning streak is coming off a 2-0 victory against Colgate on October 3.
Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) recorded four saves as SU shutout Colgate, 2-0, on October 3 to improve to 7-6 overall. Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) and senior forward Megan Stuart (New Holland, Pa.) scored for Syracuse.
With the two victories last week, the Wildcats (10-3) have won six consecutive games for the first time since 2003. Villanova is just one win away from matching the longest winning streak in program history, which was a seven-game streak in 1992.The Wildcats defeated Penn, 3-2, and La Salle, 1-0, last week.
SERIES WITH VILLANOVA
This is the 21st meeting between Syracuse and Villanova. The Orange holds a 14-6 advantage in the all-time series. The Orange and the Wildcats squared off twice last season with each winning once. SU took home a 4-3 victory in Syracuse, but Villanova defeated SU, 4-1 in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
The Wildcats are led in scoring by Megan Foster’s 19 goals and 46 points. Foster, Allison Boris and Stephanie Campbell have all recorded a team-best eight assists. BIG EAST Honor Roll member Alex Whalen has seen the majority of action in the cage and currently holds a 2.16 goals-against-average and a .696 saves percentage.
SHUTOUT
Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) recorded her third shutout of the season in SU’s 2-0 victory against Colgate on October 3. Hess also shutout Pennsylvania, 1-0, and Massachusetts, 1-0 on September 2 and September 29, respectively.
BIG EAST HONOR ROLL
The SU field hockey team had a player named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this week. Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) received the honor for her performances against No. 9 Penn State on September 27 and Georgetown on October 1. Babbitt scored five goals in SU’s victories against the Nittany Lions and Hoyas last week. She scored a career-high two goals against No. 9 Penn State, and recorded her first career hat trick as SU defeated Georgetown, 5-3, on Oct. 1.
ORANGE LEADERS
Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) has recorded a team-best nine goals and 19 points. Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) has registered a team-high six assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) has seen the majority of action in the cage for the Orange and has recorded a 1.93 goals-against-average and a .632 saves percentage.
BIG EAST LEADERS
Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) is ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in goals with eight. Megan Foster of Villanova leads the BIG EAST with 20 goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) is fifth in saves with 32. Rosalyn Wentko leads the BIG EAST with 88.
NATIONAL LEADERS
Senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) is ranked fourth in the nation in penalty strokes with two. She is also 44th in assists per game (0.50). Sophomore forward Alison Babbitt (Spencer, N.Y.) is 46th in goals per game (0.67) and sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) is 47th in goals-against-average (2.31). As a team, the Orange is 29th in penalty corners per game (6.67), 37th in GAA (2.08), 38th in won-lost-tied percentage (0.50), 39th in goals scored per game (2.17), 42nd in points (6.00) and 45th in assists (1.0).
