South Orange, N.J. – The Orange lost a close four-game match to conclude its 2006 season, losing to Seton Hall 3-1 (30-25, 30-28, 25-30, 32-30). Freshman Sarah Morton set a school record with 14 total blocks in the defeat. The Orange finishes the season with a record of 11-25 and 5-9 in the BIG EAST.
South Orange, N.J. – The Orange lost a close four-game match to conclude its 2006 season, losing to Seton Hall 3-1 (30-25, 30-28, 25-30, 32-30). Freshman Sarah Morton set a school record with 14 total blocks in the defeat. The Orange finishes the season with a record of 11-25 and 5-9 in the BIG EAST.
Morton recorded one solo block and 13 block assists, setting the school record with 14 total blocks in a four-game match. The previous record of 13 was set in 1991 by Angie Casazza against Alabama and by Jen Malcom in 2004 against Washington State. Morton’s 13 block assists also matched the mark set by Casazza in 1991. Morton’s 145 total blocks on the season are the ninth-most in school history. Syracuse recorded 38 block assists, one shy of the record set against Providence in 1999.
Freshman Kacie MacTavish led the Orange with 22 kills, one shy of her career best. She also recorded 13 digs. Sophomore Emily Kaier posted eight kills and a personal-best seven block assists. Sophomore April Quigley recorded a team-best 42 assists, 12 digs, five kills and five block assists. Freshman Shanetha McLaurin registered a career-best 15 digs.
Junior Joscie Kaup led the Orange with 18 digs on the afternoon, raising her school-record season total to 685. Kaup also set a new school record with 5.31 digs per game. Her season total of 63 service aces is tied for second in school history and her .49 aces per game is the third-highest amount.
All four games were closely contested throughout. In the first game, Seton Hall (16-14, 5-9 BIG EAST) led 24-23 and then scored six of the final eight points to take a 1-0 advantage. The Orange used an 8-2 run midway through the second game to take a 16-12 lead. Syracuse led by as many as five points at 25-20 but the Pirates scored seven-consecutive points to take a 27-25 advantage. Syracuse tied it at 28 but the Pirates scored the game’s final two points to take a 2-0 lead.
Trailing 8-6 in the third game, the Orange scored eight-straight points to take a six-point lead. Syracuse led by as many as eight points in the game and held one for the five-point victory. The Orange started the fourth game strong, jumping to an early 7-2 lead. The Pirates cut the lead to 9-7 only to see Syracuse score nine of the next 10 points and to take an 18-9 advantage. The Pirates fought back and eventually tied the game at 27. Syracuse had two chances to win the game before Seton Hall won the game 32-30.
