DiPlacido Leads Orange at First Day of Nike Cup

Chapel Hill, N.C.- The Syracuse men and women’s swimming and diving team opened competition at the Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup at the University of North Carolina on Thursday. After the first day of competition, the women's team is in eighth place and the men are in 10th. Syracuse and North Carolina were joined by Virginia Tech, Florida State, Clemson, Miami, Kentucky, East Carolina, North Carolina State and James Madison at the three day event. Florida State leads both the men's and women's competitions.
Graduate student Alida DiPlacido (Montreal, Quebec) came in second place in the women’s one-meter diving event with a finals score of 276.10. DiPlacido was in eighth place after the preliminaries, where she scored 238.50, and lost to Jenna Dryer of Miami, who scored 305.75 in the finals. Junior Tory McKenna (Westford, Mass.) came in 23rd place with a score of 188.30 and freshman Kirsten Thomas (Sandwich, Mass.) placed 28th with a score of 131.30.
In the women’s 500 free, sophomore Sarah Manning (Syracuse, N.Y.) placed 41st in the preliminaries with her best time of the season (5:10.26). In the women’s 50 free, Katelyn Schumacher (Irvine, Calif.) recorded SU’s top finish, coming in 53rd place (25.13), and senior Petra Zavadilova (Olomouc, Czech Republic) was right behind her in 54th (25.22). Both times were season-bests.
Manning, Schumacher and Zavadilova teamed with senior Randi Beaulieu (Mississauga, Ontario) on the 200 free relay team that came in 13th place (1:39.21). Schumacher and Manning were also a part of the 400 medley relay team, along with sophomore Catrina Roth (Aurora, Ill.) and freshman Masha Glukhova (Nahabino-3, Russia), that placed 17th (3:56.59).
In the men’s 500 free, freshman Alex Taraskin (Moscow, Russia) came in 28th (4:43.19), followed by senior Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) who posted a season-best time to come in 32nd (4:44.44). Boral also placed 26th in the 200 IM (1:57.90). Sophomore Matt Brock (Jacksonville, Fla.) had the top finish for the Orange in the men’s 50 free, coming in 54th (22.72). In the men’s one-meter diving event, junior Patrick White (Poulsbo, Wash.) came in 15th place with a score of 223.55. Boral, Brock and Taraskin teamed with freshman Moshe Kohen on the men's 200 free relay team that came in 18th (1:29.29). Kohen and Brock were also a part of Syracuse's top team in the 400 medley relay, along with sophomore Tom Nowakowski (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Glenn Kalata (Trumbull, Conn.), coming in 19th place (3:35.35).
Competition continues at the Nike Cup on Friday and concludes Saturday.
