SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The SU men’s basketball team carries a 4-0 record into its Thanksgiving eve showdown with Atlantic 10 foe Charlotte (1-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The Orange defeated Northeastern, 81-58, in its most recent outing on Nov. 15 to move up one spot to #17 in this week's Associated Press Poll. SU also jumped up six positions to #14 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches rankings following the triumph.
Sophomore Eric Devendorf (Bay City, Mich.) led SU with 19 points against the Huskies. He has been the Orange’s leading scorer in three of its four games and is averaging a team-best 16.8 ppg.
Senior Terrence Roberts (Jersey City, N.J.) is the club’s top rebounder at 11.5 boards per game. He grabbed 13 rebounds against Northeastern, one shy of his career high. Freshman Paul Harris (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) had the best game of his young career against the Huskies, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Harris also threw down a thunderous dunk with a little more than six minutes left to bring the Carrier Dome faithful to its feet.
The Northeastern victory moved Jim Boeheim into 15th on the all-time NCAA wins list (730), snapping a tie with Jerry Tarkanian.
Coach Boeheim’s squad is averaging 81.2 points per game and has surrendered just 59.5 points per contest. SU is shooting better than 48 percent from the field as a unit (111-230) compared to 34.1 percent for its opponents (86-252).
Charlotte is coached by ninth-year man Bobby Lutz and has reached the postseason in seven (5 NCAA, 2 NIT) of his first eight years with the program. The 49ers were 19-13 in 2005-06 and advanced to the NIT. They are 1-1 in two outings this year.
The 49ers opened the season with an 88-82 victory on Nov. 11 against Hofstra which the Orange will face on Dec. 22. De’Angelo Alexander and Leemire Goldwire each scored 26 points in the victory. Goldwire’s performance garnered him Atlantic 10 Player of the Week accolades.
The following day, Charlotte was beaten by North Texas at home, 90-72. Alexander had another monster showing, netting 25 points in the loss. He leads the 49ers with a 25.5 points per game scoring average.
E.J. Drayton has also made a name for himself early this season, averaging a double-double in Charlotte’s first two games. Drayton leads the 49ers at 13.0 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 11.5 points per outing.
SU owns a 2-1 lead in the all-time series between the two teams. The 49ers picked up their first win against the Orange, 96-92, in the 2003-04 season opener. It was the first time in since the Carrier Dome opened that SU lost its home starter.
The game was shootout between the 49ers’ Brendan Plavich and SU’s Gerry McNamara. Plavich set a Carrier Dome opponent record with 10 3-point field goals and finished with 31 points. McNamara netted 34, including eight triples.
