SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange linebacker Jerry Mackey and quarterback Perry Patterson will play in the 2006 Magnolia Grid-iron Classic on Saturday, December 23. The second annual senior all-star game will be played in Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Miss. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. (CT).
Mackey closed the 2006 season with 64 tackles, which ranked ninth in The BIG EAST Conference. He also had one interception, returned a fumble for a touchdown and had one sack. Mackey scored a touchdown on a fumble return at Illinois, becoming the second Mackey to score a touchdown for the Orange. Mackey moved from middle linebacker to outside linebacker prior to his senior season and started all 10 games he played in 2006.
Patterson finished his career as one of the best quarterbacks in school history, ranking in the top five on six Syracuse record lists. He ranks fourth all-time in passing yards (5,220), third in career completions (456), third in career passing attempts (862), fifth in completion percentage (.529), fifth in career touchdown passes (25) and fifth in career plays (1,094). His 2006 performance also ranks among the best on the list of Syracuse signal callers. He finished fourth in completions (158), second in pass attempts (300) and tied for ninth in touchdowns (12). Patterson’s 2006 interception percentage of 1.33 is the fourth-best mark in the NCAA this season and his career mark of 2.90 ranks 17th among active players.
