SYRACUSE, N.Y. - #23 Syracuse (8-2) faces Baylor (6-2) for the first time in program history when the Bears come to the Dome on Saturday, Dec. 16 for a 7:00 p.m. contest. It will mark the fifth straight game the Orange go up against a club with a winning record. Tickets for the game can be purchased on suathletics.com by clicking here or by calling the Carrier Dome Box Office at 1-888-DOMETIX.
The game will be televised live in the Syracuse area on Time Warner Ch. 26. Live streaming audio and video of the contest is also available on suathletics.com via Orange All-Access. It will also be carried live on Sirius Satellite Radio channel 110.
The Orange ended its two-game losing streak in its last outing, a 79-52 thumping of Central New York rival Colgate on Dec. 9. Senior Demetris Nichols tied his career high with 28 points against Raiders and outscored Colgate by himself in the second half, 24-22. Nichols tied his career-best with six 3-pointers and the Orange hit a season-high 13 triples in the game. The scoring outburst vaulted Nichols into the upper echelon of BIG EAST scorers at 17.6 points per game which is tied for third in the league.
Syracuse’s 3-point barrage pushed its shooting percentage from beyond the arc up to .403 (73-181) which ranks second in the conference behind Villanova. Sophomore Andy Rautins contributed to the 3-point deluge with three triples on his way to a career-best 13 points.
Senior Terrence Roberts scored 12 points against Colgate, his third straight game in double figures. Roberts is one half of the top active shot-blocking duo in the conference. The Jersey City, N.J. product has 101 career blocks. His classmate, Darryl Watkins, is the BIG EAST’s active leader in rejections (178) and the two have combined for 279 blocks during their stay in Orange. Watkins swatted four shots versus Colgate.
Baylor’s 6-2 mark is dented only by losses to nationally-ranked Gonzaga and South Carolina. Coach Scott Drew, the son of Valparaiso coach Homer Drew, is in his fourth season at the Baylor helm. He’s guided the program through a difficult probation period. The 2006-07 campaign is his first with a full allotment of scholarships available and games scheduled.
The Bears field a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging between 11.9 and 13.9 points per game. Sophomore guard Henry Dugat leads the way (13.9 ppg.), followed by sophomore forward Kevin Rogers (12.8), sophomore guard Curtis Jerrrells (12.5) and junior guard Aaron Bruce (11.9). Bruce is also average 5.3 assists per outing and just 2.0 turnovers. The Baylor offense has averaged 81.6 points per game this year and shot .502 from the field.
Sophomore Mamadou Diene, a 7-0 center, leads the club in rebound average (7.4). The Bears have only one active senior on the roster – reserve forward Tim Bush.
The Bears are the only team the Orange face in 2006 that it hasn’t competed against previously.
