SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Kenneth Miles has been named associate athletics director for student support services at Syracuse University by director of athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. Miles joined the University staff in 1997 as the director of academic support for football. In 2002, he left the athletics department to become the assistant dean of student services for the School of Information Studies. He was promoted to executive director of admissions and diversity enrollment management at the School of Information Studies in 2006.
“I am excited to continue to grow the department and to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the student-athletes and coaches,” Miles said. “We want to equip young men and women with the necessary skills for success and to become good citizens and catalysts for change. In addition, I would like to teach them about the power of choices and how to create options.”
While serving as director of academic support for football, Miles coordinated all academic support services, including tutorial support, athletic department and university orientations, study table, and computer room use. He monitored academic progress of student athletes and assisted with individual course selection. Miles also assisted student-athletes with career development and employment searches. The Syracuse football program earned the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Achievement Award, in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The 1999 citation recognized Syracuse for the highest graduation rate among Division I-A programs in the country (100%).
“This is truly a great day for athletics as Kenneth Miles brings incredible and impeccable resources to the
academic director’s position,” Gross said. “Kenneth has tremendous experience and expertise. As a student-athlete he was very active and integrated into the mainstream. He is nationally known and has been recognized as one of the top professionals in the student-athlete academic advisement industry. We are so proud that we could have someone of this magnitude join us in our mission to create the ultimate student-athlete experience. Kenneth believes in our mission and he believes the student-athlete experience should be as extraordinary and as fruitful as possible. I look forward to Kenneth leading us to having the highest graduation rates in the country, while maintaining a quality education for all our student-athletes.”
He earned his bachelor’s degree (studio art, 1992) and his masters of education (social foundations of education, 1999) from the University of Virginia. He is currently working on his PhD in cultural foundations of education from Syracuse University.
After working as an art teacher and football and track coach at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. from 1993 to 1995, he returned to his alma mater in 1995 as academic and life skills coordinator. Miles held that position until his initial hiring at Syracuse.
Through the ‘Our Time Has Come’ scholarship, Miles established the Kenneth O. Miles Scholarship in 2006 to meet unmet financial needs for African-American, Latino and Native American students at Syracuse University.
Miles has been recognized a number of times for his accomplishments, including being named Marquis Who’s Who in America six times (2002-2007), Marquis Who’s Who in American Education five times (2003-07), and Marquis Who’s Who in the World four times (2003-06). He received a 2004 Exemplary Award Recipient from Syracuse University’s IST Process Team.
He has made a number of public presentations, including speeches to the Syracuse University School of Information Studies, the Syracuse University Black Graduate Student Association, the University of Virginia and Gonzaga College High School. He has served on many University and community committees. This year Miles was named to the Equity & Student-Athlete Welfare Subcommittee. His other current affiliations include Co-Curricular Fee Committee, Breaking Barriers Committee, Marshall Committee, Alumni Alliance Committee, Africa Initiative Committee, Academic Coordinating Committee, and the University Judicial Board Appeals Committee.
