SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University softball head coach Leigh Ross released the 2007 Orange softball schedule on Tuesday, December 5. This upcoming season features matchups against 10 teams that finished in the Regionals or better in the 2006 season with two of those programs advancing to the Women's College World Series. Seven teams finished in the Top 25 of the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.
“The schedule will be a great challenge for our team,” Ross said. “Most schools in the country would love to have the schedule we have. Our team is excited to play such top caliber programs.”
Syracuse will start off the season by matching up against two of the NCAA Division I World Series qualifiers UCLA (Feb. 9) and Arizona State (Feb. 9). UCLA finished the 2006 season with a 50-9 record and has won 11 national championships. ASU also advanced to the WCWS (for the 12th time) and finished with a record of 53-15. The Orange’s season is also highlighted by its home games against four BIG EAST teams, Louisville (April 13), South Florida (April 15), Rutgers (April 28) and Villanova (April 29), at the SU Softball Stadium.
The Orange opens the 2007 campaign with an appearance at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. from Feb. 9-11. Syracuse competes in the adidas-Golden Panther Invitational (Feb. 23-25) where the Orange will face Stanford, which ended with a 42-18 record and its ninth consecutive 40-plus win season.
SU then heads to the Texas A&M Invitational (March 2-4) to battle McNeese State, Illinois and Texas A&M, which was ranked No. 22 in the coaches poll to end the season. Syracuse concludes the preseason at the Florida State Invitational (March 9-11) and Stetson Tournament (March 16-18) before beginning its BIG EAST schedule.
