BALTIMORE, Md. – Seven members of the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team have been named 2007 preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse. Junior attackman Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.), graduate student midfielder Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) and senior long-stick midfielder Steve Panarelli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) were selected to the first team. Sophomore attackman Dan Hardy (Tully, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Pat Perritt (Holtsville, N.Y.) were picked to the third team and junior midfielder Steve Brooks (Libertyville, Ill.) and junior defenseman Kyle Guadagnolo (Jordan, N.Y.) were honorable mention choices.
Overall, 90 of the top Division I lacrosse players in the country were recognized by Inside Lacrosse’s Face-Off Yearbook which will be out later this month. Syracuse and Duke each had three players named to the first team, the most of any school. The Orange’s seven overall selections tied Virginia, Johns Hopkins and Princeton for the most by any one team.
Leveille was an honorable mention All-American in 2006. He had a breakout sophomore season, finishing second on the team in scoring with 52 points, including 31 goals and a team-best 21 assists. He registered at least two points in every game last season, including a personal-best six (1g, 5a) versus Albany.
Rommel started two games and scored two goals in 2006 before suffering a season-ending injury. He was a second-team All-American in 2005 after netting a career-high 28 points. Rommel was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Men’s At-Large First Team in 2004 and 2005 and he was chosen as the male recipient of the 2006 Soladay Award, the most prestigious honor presented to a student-athlete by the SU Department of Athletics.
Panarelli has earned All-America honors three times, including honorable mention laurels in 2006. He started all 15 games for the Orange last season as a defensive midfielder and finished the year with five goals and a total of six points. He led the team with 61 ground balls.
Hardy tied for fifth on last year’s team with 21 points (11g, 10a). He netted a career-best three points at Virginia last season and also three points to help the Orange to a 13-12 victory against Johns Hopkins in the NCAA quarterfinals. Hardy’s scoring total was tied for the highest by an Orange freshman in 2006 with Perritt. Perritt also finished with 21 points on 17 goals and four assists. He started all 15 games in the midfield last year and earned honorable mention All-America honors in his first season.
Brooks was injured in SU’s season opener versus Army and missed the remainder of the 2006 campaign. In 2005, he was part of SU’s top midfield line. He saw action in all 13 games that season and finished with 29 points (17g, 12a).
Guadagnolo was one of six Orange players to start all 15 games in 2006. He scooped up 31 ground balls on the season.
The Orange, ranked third in Inside Lacrosse’s preseason rankings, will begin the 2007 season at home against Hobart on Feb. 18.
