SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women’s tennis team defeated Colgate, 7-0, to earn its second consecutive victory at the Drumlins Tennis Club on Sunday. The Orange lost two games or less in all but one set in singles play and in all but one doubles pro-set.
SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women’s tennis team defeated Colgate, 7-0, to earn its second consecutive victory at the Drumlins Tennis Club on Sunday. The Orange lost two games or less in all but one set in singles play and in all but one doubles pro-set.
The Orange earned the doubles point with sophomores Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) and Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) winning at number one. The pair trailed 4-3 to start the match before winning five straight games to close out an 8-4 victory. SU got an 8-2 win from its number two pairing of senior Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) and junior Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.), while at number three, sophomore Zeljka Juricek (Zagreb, Croatia) and freshman Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) played to an 8-1 triumph.
In singles play, Vaynberg continued her impressive play this season, winning her fourth straight match at number one by the score of, 6-2, 6-2. At number two, Zawadzki snapped her two-match losing streak by cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Bramante won 6-1, 6-1 at flight three, while Vasilyeva won the first set in her match at number four, 6-1, before being pushed in the second set, winning 7-5. Juricek earned a straight sets victory at number five, while junior Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) lost just one game in her match at flight six.
SU improves to 2-2 on the season with the win, while Colgate is now 3-2. The Orange will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 17 when it travels to take on Princeton and 6 p.m.
