10 Orange Student-Athletes Named To BIG EAST All-Academic Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior linebacker Tommy Harris (Daytona Beach, Fla.) headed a class of 10 SU student-athletes that were named to the 2005 BIG EAST All-Academic Team, announced today by the conference office. Harris and junior running back Tim Washington (Bristol, Conn.) are both repeat members from the Orange squad. The 10 selections to the team is the second most behind West Virginia.
Harris earned his undergraduate degree in information management and technology and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in information studies. He is one of just 10 student-athletes to make back-to-back appearances on the team this year. Harris is a three-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Along with his prowess in the classroom, he was eighth on the team in tackles in 2005 despite missing two games due to an injury. Harris totaled 45 tackles, including 29 solo stops, two tackles for a loss, a pass break up, and a fumble recovery.
Washington, an information management and technology major, played in five games for the Orange in 2005. He rushed seven times for 25 yards. He is a five-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Redshirt freshman Paul Chiara (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) is enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences. He appeared in all 11 games for the Orange in 2005 and totaled 94 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries. Chiara also caught four passes for 30 yards.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Durand (Leominster, Mass.), who is majoring in health and exercise science, played in seven games this season. He helped SU run the ball for a total of 1,172 yards for the season. Damien Rhodes used his blockers for 900 of those yards to finish his career ninth on SU’s all-time career rushing yards list. Durand was a member of the 2004 Fall Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Redshirt freshman James Flaherty (Wakefield, R.I.) is currently enrolled in the College of Human Services and Health Professions. He saw action in all 11 games this season and recorded five tackles, including three solo. Flaherty was a member of the 2004 Fall Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Senior long snapper Kevin Kopko (Collegeville, Pa.), majoring in biology, appeared in one game this year for the Orange. He has been a member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester.
Redshirt freshman Ben Maljovec (Warren, Pa.), majoring in information management and technology, was one of 36 players to appear in all 11 games in 2005. He notched a tackle assist in the season-opener against West Virginia.
Senior defensive end Justin Opalenski (Providence, R.I.) is a triple major in finance, marketing management, and entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises. He appeared in the final game of the season at Louisville. Opalenski is a three-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Freshman kicker Patrick Shadle (Morgantown, W. Va.), who is enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences, missed his only field goal attempt of the season from 39 yards against Buffalo.
Freshman Bruce Williams (Syracuse, N.Y.) is currently enrolled in the College of Human Services and Health Professions. He appeared in all 11 games for the Orange and caught four passes for 52 yards. He also returned nine punts for 87 yards and five kickoffs for 109 yards.
The 2006 football squad beings Spring practice on March 20 and the annual Spring game will be held on April 15.
