SU 800-Free Relay Takes Silver at BIG EAST Championship

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams began competition at the BIG EAST Championship on Wednesday with the men’s 800-freestyle relay highlighting day one for the Orange by placing second. The men’s team is in fourth place overall heading into day two.
The 800-free relay finished the race in a time of 6:37.74. Members of the relay included senior Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.), senior Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.), junior Wes Matson (Wichita, Kansas) and junior Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland).
Also competing in Wednesday’s finals was SU’s women’s 200-medley relay of freshman Catrina Roth (Aurora, Ill.), sophomore Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla.), junior Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic) and junior Randi Beaulieu (Mississauga, Ontario) that swam to a seventh place finish. The relay came in with a time of 1:45.06.
The men’s 200-medley relay team posted an eighth place finish in a time of 1:32.65. Swimming the 200-medley relay for the Orange were Persico, Boral, senior Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M.) and senior Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y.).
Rounding out SU’s finals participants from the opening day of competition was the women’s 800-free relay of freshman Sarah Manning (Syracuse, N.Y.), sophomore Erin Homewood (Williamsburg, Va.), sophomore Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) and senior Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.). The squad finished in a time of 7:33.47.
The men’s team is in fifth place after day one with 56 points, just five points behind second place Pittsburgh. The women find themselves in ninth place with 42 points.
