Men's Soccer Begins Spring Workouts

Improving player fundamentals is the goal for Orange head coach Dean Foti and the rest of his coaching staff as SU continues its 2006 spring workouts. The practice sessions began a little over a week ago and will culminate in the annual Alumni Game at the SU Soccer Stadium on April 29.

“During the spring we aren’t getting ready for a game every Wednesday and Saturday,” Foti said. “It gives us a chance to do a lot of skill work and get in a lot repetitions.”

What sorts of the things is SU working on?

“Driving long balls, shooting, heading. Really trying to improve on the technical aspects of the game,” Foti said. “Especially heading. That’s something we’re working with everyone on.”

The Orange coaching staff works directly with each player individually during training sessions and the team also does some scrimmaging.

Like many teams here on campus, the men’s soccer squad uses the Carrier Dome to train in the off-season, but Foti and his troops have been able to get outside a few times because of the mild winter weather.

“The Dome is great because we have 80 yards to train,” Foti said. “Sometimes we can’t always get in there because of basketball, but because it’s been so nice we’ve been able to train on the field a little bit, which we haven’t always been able to do”

The Orange will continue to train through April and will participate in its first scheduled off-season scrimmage against Colgate and Albany on Saturday, April 1 in Hamilton, N.Y.

Foti is entering his 16^th year at the helm of the SU program. He is the Orange’s winningest coach with 117 career victories. He guided the Orange to a 7-8-4 overall mark last season and a berth in the 2005 BIG EAST Conference Championship.
