Three Orange Headed to Friday’s Finals

EAST MEADOW, N.Y.- The Syracuse men’s swimming and diving team saw three swimmers advance to Friday’s finals at the BIG EAST Championships in East Meadow, N.Y. Competing in the finals will be senior Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.), junior West Matson (Wichita, Kan.) and junior Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland).

Persico earned his way into the finals in the 100-backstroke by placing second in a time of 50.26. Matson was the fourth place finisher in the 200-freestyle prelim with a time of 1:40.01, while Boral snuck into the 100-breaststroke final by coming in seventh in a time of 56.56.

Several women earned spots in Friday night’s consolation finals. Senior Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) will compete in the 200-free after taking 14^th in the prelims with a time of 1:53.20.

In the 100-breast, two Orange earned berths in the consolations finals as sophomore Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla.) and freshman Dani Stein (Boylston Lake, N.Y.) finished 10^th and 13^th, respectively. Junior Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic) advanced by placing 11^th in the 100-butterfly in a time of 56.58, while teammate senior Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) was right behind her in 12^th place with a time of 56.72.

Heading into the fifth of seven sessions at the BIG EAST Championships, the SU men are in eighth place with 100 points, while the women are in ninth with 84. Notre Dame is atop the men’s standings and Rutgers is in first on the women’s side. Friday’s finals will begin at 6 p.m. at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
