WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry, one of the most recognized in college basketball, renews on February 25 when the Orange travels to Washington D.C. to take on the Hoyas in the MCI Center at 12:00 p.m.
The game will be televised by ESPN Regional. The Syracuse ISP Radio Network will provide its broadcast of the game on WAQX-95.7 FM and WNSS 1260 AM in Syracuse. This can also be heard through Orange All Access right here at www.suathletics.com. SIRIUS Satellite Radio will carry a broadcast of the game on channel 123.
The contest will certainly impact the still unsettled BIG EAST Conference Tournament pairings. Syracuse (19-8, 7-6) is 1.5 games behind Georgetown (17-7, 8-5) in the standings. The Hoyas have played 14 league contests to SU’s 13.
Syracuse is coming off back-to-back victories against Louisville and #14/15 West Virginia. Senior guard Gerry McNamara leads the Orange in scoring average (16.1).
Georgetown has put together the 23rd ranking in both polls and an 18-7 overall record this winter with a remarkable example of team play. Only one Georgetown player ranks in the top 10 of any of the 13 BIG EAST individual statistical categories (all games). The Hoyas are ranked first in the league in field goal percentage (.479) and second in scoring defense (.596), two key team categories.
Coach John Thompson III has relied on great offensive balance – six different players average between 12.4 points and 8.4 points per game. Sophomore center Roy Hibbert, at 7-2 one of the tallest players in the collegiate ranks, averages a Hoya-best 12.4 points per game. He’s second in rebounds with a 6.3 mark. Hibbert is coming off a 25-point, eight-rebound effort in Wednesday’s win against Rutgers.
Sophomore forward Jeff Green leads the team in rebounding average (6.4) and ranks second in scoring (11.6).
Syracuse leads the overall series, 40-34, while the BIG EAST portion of the series is also in favor of the Orange, 29-28.
