SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The women’s lacrosse team received a ranking of No. 13 from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), announced yesterday. Earlier in the preseason, the Orange received a No. 14 ranking from Lacrosse Magazine.
Last season, SU finished with an IWLCA ranking of No. 12. The Orange went 12-5 in 2005 and returned to the NCAA Tournament after missing out in 2004. Syracuse was edged by Dartmouth, 9-8, in the first round in Hanover, N.H.
Northwestern earned the No. 1 ranking and will visit the Carrier Dome on March 31. The Orange beat the Wildcats the only other time it came to The Hill in 2003. Other non-conference opponents that earned rankings include Dartmouth, which is No. 3. The Big Green visits the Dome on Feb. 27 in a game televised by Time Warner Sports 26. Virginia comes in at No. 5 in the nation. SU travels to Charlottesville on March 4 to take on the Cavaliers. Towson earned a No. 12 seed and the Orange will host the Tigers on March 19. On April 19, Syracuse heads to Ithaca to take on No. 18 Cornell.
SU is the second-highest ranked BIG EAST team in the poll. Georgetown, the preseason favorite to take the conference crown, is ranked No. 10 in the country. Loyola, which joined the BIG EAST this season in women’s lacrosse, came in just behind SU at No. 14. Notre Dame earned the same number of votes as Cornell and came in at No. 18.
The Orange open the 2006 season on Saturday, Feb. 25 when it hosts Harvard at the Carrier Dome.
