CHICAGO – Senior guard Gerry McNamara scored 21 points (five 3-pointers) to become the sixth player in Syracuse men's basketball history to record 2,000 career points, but the Orange lost a 108-69 decision to DePaul at the Allstate Arena. He tied the BIG EAST Conference record, held by Miami's Steve Edwards, for career 3-point field goals made (178), and moved up to seventh on the NCAA career 3-point list (379). McNamara is in sixth place on SU's career scoring list with 2,003 points.
The last time a Syracuse team gave up 100 points to an opponent was Dec. 4, 1996 when West Virginia defeated the Orange, 101-79. It was only the fifth time during Coach Jim Boeheim's tenure that SU has yielded over 100 points.
DePaul had five players in double figures and canned 16-of-28 shots from beyond the three-point arc to improve its season record to 12-14, 5-10 in the BIG EAST Conference. Syracuse is now 19-10 on the season, 7-8 in league play. The 16 three's were the most ever dropped on the Orange by an opponent, while DePaul's 35 assists were also an opponent high. The previous record for assists in a game by an opponent was 29 set by Georgetown in 1987.
The Blue Demons extended the Syracuse zone early by hitting 8-of-17 three's in the first half. Freshman forward Wilson Chandler scored two of his 16 points off a mid-range jumper in the lane to give DePaul its largest lead of the half, 38-23. The Blue Demons were ahead by 14 at intermission, 48-34.
The hosts opened the second stanza with a 14-5 run during the first six minutes to take a 23-point lead, 62-39. Easy baskets in transition and a 3-pointer by Chandler led to an 82-51 Blue Demon advantage with 9:30 remaining.
Draelon Burns scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half, including back-to-back 3's with 6:44 on the clock to put DePaul on top, 93-54.
With 1:26 remaining, freshman guard Rashad Woods gave the Blue Demons their largest lead of the night, 108-66.
For Syracuse, freshman guard Eric Devendorf finished with 15 points. Junior forward Terrence Roberts had nine points and nine rebounds.
The Orange is home for the regular-season finale against Villanova on Sunday, March 5, at 12 p.m. CBS is televising the game.
