SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Former Syracuse Orange rower Andrew Wright ‘04 will race in the upcoming Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge on Sunday, April 2nd along the Thames River in England. Wright will be racing for the Oxford crew in the Isis/Goldie race, which consists of both schools’ reserve rowers.
The historic race will be the 152nd meeting between Cambridge and Oxford. It is the longest running sporting event in England and draws one of the largest crowds on the British sporting calendar. The event draws 250,000 people to the banks of the Thames River and over 6 million people view the event live on BBC.
Wright attended SU and rowed during the 2001-2004 seasons. After graduation he attended Oxford University and kept training hard. His weekly schedule has consisted of 12 practices, both on the water and indoors.
“It has been almost seven months since I started training here,” Wright said. “The work we have done to get to this point is remarkable. Even though I will not be rowing in the blue boat, the intensity and competitiveness is equivalent in the Isis/Goldie race.”
The Oxford crew won the race last year by 6 seconds and is the winner in three of the last four meetings. Cambridge still holds the overall record 78-72 which dates back to 1829.
Wright is excited about the upcoming race and feels confident in his crew’s ability to continue Oxford’s success.
“I hope to win, I plan to win, everything we have done over the past seven months has prepared us to win, but in a two boat race somebody has to lose,” Wright said. “We can’t dwell on that though, from here on out we are going to focus on being as prepared for the
race as possible.”
Rowing in this race is a lifelong dream for many rowers and Wright understands what an incredible experience he is having. All of his long hours training have paid off and he can reflect on what he has accomplished “It seems wrong to deem this one of the best times I have ever had while rowing,” Wright said.
The Isis/Goldie race will take place at 4:05 p.m. on April 2nd. Then 30 minutes later the Blue Boats, consisting of the top rowers, will compete for the annual championship.
