SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer program has received commitments from nine high school standouts to attend Syracuse University and compete as members of the men’s soccer team in 2006, SU head coach Dean Foti announced on Friday, March 31. Scott Campbell (Marcellus, N.Y.), Pete Hill (Pittsford, N.Y.), Erik Kreider (Webster, N.Y.), Geoff Lytle (Miami Beach, Fla.), Ryan McCormick (Cranston, R.I.), Daniel Sherry (Louisville, Ky.), Elliott Townsend (Freeport, Maine), Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) and Jake Young (Blandon, Pa.) have all committed to the Orange for next season.
Campbell played locally at Marcellus High School and helped the Mustangs to a 19-5-1 overall record and the 2005 New York State Class B championship. He notched 15 goals and six assists as a senior on his way to OHSL Player of the Year and second-team all-state honors. Campbell scored 53 goals and had 23 assists in four seasons at Marcellus.
Like Campbell, Hill guided his high school, Pittsford Mendon, to a New York State championship (Class A) in 2005. Hill was a first-team all-american and all-state performer He was selected also selected as the 2005 Section V and All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year after anchoring the Vikings’ defense and contributing nine goals and 10 assists. He scored 20 goals and handed out 21 assists in his career and was a two-time team captain.
Kreider was a 2005 first-team all-county selection at Webster Thomas High School in Webster, N.Y. He competed in the Section V Exceptional Senior Game and earned the contest’s Offensive MVP Award. Kreider tallied 10 goals and six assists in 2005, helping the Titans to the Class AA sectional final.
A member of the two-time district champion Miami Beach Hi-Tides, Lytle was an All-Dade County first-team choice in 2005. He notched eight goals and contributed 23 helpers as a senior. Lytle also helped the West Kendall SC to the 2005 state title and was a member of the Super Y-League ODP Regional Team.
McCormick guided the LaSalle Academy Rams of Rhode Island to a 77-2-5 record in his four seasons. The Rams finished with a top 10 national ranking in each of his final three years and won the state championship each season. In 2005, McCormick was part of a defensive unit that allowed just seven goals. He was a member of the 2005 state all-tournament team and earned first-team all-state accolades.
Sherry attended Trinity High School in Louisville, Ky. and scored 20 points as a senior (five goals, 10 assists). He also led the Javanon SC to the 2004 KYSA crown. He was a two-time captain at Trinity and was chosen as the squad’s Defensive MVP. He was also a member of the Kentucky state ODP for four years.
A two-time all-state selection at Freeport High School in Maine, Townsend led Freeport in scoring in 2003, 2004 and 2005. He totaled 44 goals and 16 assists in his career and netted 19 goals and one assist as a senior. Townsend was picked to compete in the state senior all-star game and was the Falmouth Forcaster Fall Athlete of the Year in 2005.
Woodruff won the 2006 Florida Dairy Farmers Class 5A Player of the Year Award and guided South Fork to the 2004 and 2006 district titles. He scored 37 goals and racked up 28 assists in his senior campaign and finished his career with 86 goals and 52 helpers. He was a three-time all-area selection by The Palm Beach Post and the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers. Woodruff also earned first-team, all-state recognition as a football player in 2005.
Young tallied 12 goals and 10 assists for a total of 34 points as a senior at Fleetwood High School in Pennsylvania on his way to first-team all-state recognition. He was also named to the 2005 Berks County First Team. As a freshman, he helped the Tigers to the county championship and in his junior season led them to the PIAA state semifinals.
The Orange begins its spring season on Saturday, April 1 with scrimmages against Colgate and Albany in Hamilton, N.Y. SU earned a berth in the BIG EAST Championship last season and finished with an overall record of 7-8-4.
