SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In the midst of an uncharacteristic four-game losing skid, the Orange looks to get back in the win column against visiting Loyola on Saturday, April 1, at 4 p.m. Syracuse dropped to 1-4 on the season following Tuesday night’s 9-8 loss to Hobart at the Carrier Dome. The last time an Orange lacrosse squad opened the season with a 1-4 record was 1975.
Loyola received votes in this week's STX/USILA Coaches Poll and was ranked No. 19 in the latest Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The Greyhounds bring a 3-3 mark into the contest after losing two out of their last three games. All three losses were to nationally-ranked teams (Towson, Duke and Massachusetts), with the worst loss being decided by five goals, 14-9, to the Minutemen of UMass on March 25. The Greyhounds posted wins against Penn State (9-6), Wagner (19-4) and St. John’s (6-5).
Head coach Charles Toomey is in his first season at Loyola after serving nine seasons as assistant coach at the school. His top scorer is junior attackman Patrick Kennedy with 12 goals and 20 points. Dan Bauers is second with 16 points (nine goals, seven assists), while Ryan Rabidou is the squad’s second-leading goal scorer with 10 markers. Michael Fretwell starts in goal and sports a .608 save percentage and an 8.89 goals against average.
This will be the 21st meeting between Syracuse and Loyola. The Orange owns a 16-4 lead in the all-time series and has won the last four meetings, including last year’s 12-6 decision in Baltimore. Loyola’s last victory against SU came in a 14-13 overtime thriller in 2001. The last time the Greyounds won at the Carrier Dome was 1998.
