Orange Rows In Cayuga Cup Regatta On Onondaga Lake

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s rowing team hosted its first regatta of the 2006 season on April 1 on Onondaga Lake with the Cayuga Cup. Yale boats won four of the six races, with the No. 4 Bulldogs winning the varsity eight competition. Heavy rain and strong headwinds provided harsh conditions throughout the morning.
The inclement weather was a factor as crews frequently veered off course. The path of the course was altered prior to the day due to the poor weather conditions and the schedule was also slightly delayed. Syracuse’s best finish came in the second varsity race, placing second at 7:33. Yale won that race by clocking in at 7:08 and Cornell finished in third at 7:39.
The morning began with the novice eights, and Cornell and Yale battled throughout. The Big Red captured the first event with a time of 7:41, beating Yale by a second. SU recorded a time of 7:55.
The fourth-ranked Yale crew won the varsity eight with a time of 7:11, with Cornell and Syracuse finishing second and third, respectively, at 7:30 and 7:35. Cornell and the Orange battled back and forth for most of the race before the Big Red pulled away to take second.
The Bulldogs’ second varsity eight provided the most impressive performance of the day, finishing in 7:08, benefiting from the declining headwind. Despite rowing well out of its lane, Yale posted the best eights time of the regatta. The Orange came in second with a time of 7:33, and Cornell rounded out the field at 7:39.
The novice four and varsity four races rowed under better conditions in the final two races of the morning. Cornell topped Syracuse in the novice fours, finishing in 8:23. Syracuse clocked in at 8:45. In the varsity fours, Yale “A” finished in first at 7:35 and the Bulldogs’ “B” crew finished in 7:52. Cornell completed the course in 8:10.
Syracuse will host another regatta next weekend when Penn and Northeastern come to The Hill to row on Onondaga Lake.
