BOSTON, MASS— The SU men’s rowing varsity eight defended its number nine national ranking on Saturday morning by holding off #10 Boston University and #19 Columbia. The Orange won the race by three seconds, the closest race thus far this season for the crew. SU’s victory ends Boston’s run of three straight Conlan Cup victories.
Syracuse’s varsity eight rowed a time of 5:43.9, while Boston was close behind with a time of 5:46.9. In the junior varsity race, Boston turned the table on the Orange, winning by a little more than two seconds. Boston posted a time of 5:54.4 with SU following in second with a time of 5:56.9. Columbia finished third in both the varsity and junior varsity eights races.
Members of the varsity eight crew on Saturday were sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Andover, Mass.), senior Terry Wilkin (King of Prussia, Pa.), junior Tim Mambort (Toledo, Ohio), junior Dave Barone (Maumee, Ohio), senior Dan O’Shaughnessy (Elizabethtown, Ontario), junior Bartosz Szczyrba (Poznan, Poland), junior Justin Stangel (Madison, Wisc.), junior Matt Morrow (Hixson, Tenn.) and junior Chad Taylor (New Milford, Conn.).
In the freshman eight race, Boston won with a time of 6:07.4, while Columbia was second in 6:10.3. The Orange had two boats in the third varsity four race with the “A” and “B” boats finishing second and third, respectively.
The Orange will next be in action on April 29 when it travels to take on Temple.
