LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Orange (29-18, 11-5) lost consecutive games for the first time in more than a month, falling twice at #23/21 Louisville (28-8, 7-3) on Saturday, April 22 at Ulmer Stadium. SU was no-hit in the first game and lost, 1-0. The Cardinals shut the Orange again in game two, winning 8-0 in five innings.
Louisville ace Catherine Bishop pitched her second career no-hitter in the opening contest. It was the second no-hitter thrown against SU this season and the fifth pitched against the Orange all-time. Texas All-American Cat Osterman tossed the other no-no of the season against SU back on Feb. 10 at the Kajikawa Classic.
Bishop struck out 10, walked four and faced five batters over the minimum in the contest.
SU starter Erin Downey (San Rafael, Calif.) matched Bishop zero for zero in each of the first five innings, but the Cardinals broke through for the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Kristi Cunningham belted a one-out triple off the wall in right and scored on a wild pitch for what proved to be the winning run.
SU’s best chance to score came in its half of the sixth frame. Sophomore Chanel Roehner (Simi Valley, Calif.) reached on an error and advanced to second on an errant throw. Rookie Heather Kim (Boulder, Colo.) walked and senior Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J.) advanced them to second and third, respectively, with a ground out to second. The Orange tried to squeeze the run home with senior Cassie Morales (Whittier, Calif.) at the plate. Morales offered at Bishop’s first pitch, but missed and catcher Lacy Wood fired down Courtney Moore covering third to pick off Roehner for the second out of the inning. Bishop got Morales to ground out to short to end the threat.
Downey allowed six hits, walked one and struck out seven in the circle for the Orange. She became of the first SU pitcher to throw 200 innings in a season with her performance in the opening game and now has 203.1 innings pitched in 2006.
Cunningham was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Cardinals.
In game two, the Cardinals scored four times in the third on six hits to go up, 4-0. The Cardinals hammered out three doubles and three singles off Switenko in the inning. Wood brought home two runs with a single through the left side and Michelle Vasquez and Brooke McCrain each belted RBI doubles in the inning.
The Cardinals added two more runs in the fourth on another two-run single by Wood to extend its margin to 6-0 and Audrey Rendon belted her second triple of the game in the bottom of the fifth to drive in two and invoke the eight-run mercy rule.
Kady Garrick got the victory for the Cardinals to improve to 7-2. She allowed three hits and struck out three. Rendon was 3-for-4 at athe plate for Louisville. She scored twice and had two RBI. Wood finished game two 3-for-3 with four runs batted in.
Kim went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles for the Orange. Classmate Tonye McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) hit her 13th double of the year in the nightcap, tying her with Katie Kaempfer for the most two-baggers ever by an SU freshman.
Switenko started both games Saturday to become the Orange’s career leader in games played and games started (193). She passed Tanya Rose who played in and started 192 career contests from 2002-05.
The Orange will play a twin bill at BIG EAST leader South Florida on Sunday, April 23. The first game will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the USF Softball Field.
