The Carrier Dome hosted its first concert on this date in 1981 when Carlos Santana performed in front of 15,213 fans. Since then, the Dome has hosted one additional concert, a figure skating champions tour, the Billy Graham Crusade, Block Party and two SU men’s lacrosse games.
The Orange played a quadruple overtime thriller against Princeton in front of 6,194 fans on this date in 1999. A close game throughout, the Tigers scored three straight goals in the second quarter to take a 9-5 lead, the largest lead either team would enjoy all day. Devin Darcangelo scored with 3:52 remaining in the half to cut Princeton’s lead to 9-6 at halftime. SU scored the first three goals of the second half to tie the score at 9-9. The teams traded goals the rest of the way as neither squad could manage more than a one-goal lead. Princeton scored two straight goals with less than six minutes remaining to re-gain the lead at 14-13. But Matt Cutia forced the eighth tie of the day when scored his third goal of the game on an assist from Ryan Powell 3:54 left in regulation. The score remained that way until Princeton’s Josh Sims scored an unassisted goal 3:35 into the fourth overtime period to give the Tigers a 15-14 victory. Powell finished with four goals and four assists to lead the Orange.
Syracuse also took on Rutgers on this date in 1987. The Orange prevailed in that contest, 7-5.
Garth Brooks performed the first of two shows in the Carrier Dome on this date in 1997. Brooks entertained sell-out crowds at both shows, becoming the first artist to sell out the Dome on consecutive nights.
In 1998, the Dome hosted the Figure Skating Champions Tour, featuring skaters who competed at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. The Billy Graham Crusade took place in the Dome on this date in 1989, and SU’s Block Party was held in the Dome in 2005.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
