PHILADELPHIA, PA.- The Syracuse University men’s rowing team won all three races on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday. The varsity eight defended its number nine ranking by holing off Virginia and Temple. The Orange remains undefeated with Saturday’s victory in the 2000m race.
The SU varsity eight finished the race in 5:35.1 with Virginia finishing second in 5:40.4. Temple was third with a time of 5:46.0. Members of the SU varsity eight on Saturday were sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Andover, Mass.), senior Terry Wilkin (King of Prussia, Pa.), junior Tim Mambort (Toledo, Ohio), junior Dave Barone (Maumee, Ohio), senior Dan O’Shaughnessy (Elizabethtown, Ontario), junior Bartosz Szczyrba (Poznan, Poland), junior Justin Stangel (Madison, Wisc.), junior Matt Morrow (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and junior Chad Taylor (New Milford, Conn.).
In the second varsity race the Orange had two boats entered with the junior varsity eight finishing first in a time of 5:43.7. Temple claimed second place, while SU’s third varsity eight came in third with a time of 5:59.1. Virginia finished fourth in the race.
Syracuse won the freshman eight race with a time of 6:01.6, six seconds ahead of second place boat Virginia. Temple was third in 6:22.8.
The Orange will next be in action on Saturday, May 13 when it travels to Hanova, N.H. to race for the Packard Cup against Dartmouth. The varsity eight will look to end Dartmouth’s 15-year win streak against the Orange as SU has not won the cup since 1990.
