SU Eliminated from 2006 BIG EAST Championship

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The fourth-seeded Orange (36-21) was eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the 2006 BIG EAST Championship by No. 5 seed DePaul, 8-0, in five innings on Friday, May 12 at Ivy Field. SU managed just one hit in the game, a single by junior Erin Gray (Katy, Texas) in the third inning.
DePaul jumped on SU starter Erin Downey (San Rafael, Calif.) right off the bat scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. The Blue Demons loaded the bases on a single, an error and a walk. Kate Sheaks cleared the bags with a triple to left center and Marcy Wilus drove in Sheaks with a sacrifice fly into foul territory in left to give DePaul a 4-0 advantage. After Stephanie Blagaich singled and Jess Evans drew a walk, Sara Bandauski looped a single into left to score Blagaich and increase the Blue Demons’ margin to 5-0.
A walk and consecutive doubles by Linda Secka and Sheaks led to two DePaul runs in the second inning to put the Blue Demons in front, 7-0.
DePaul tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Blagaich close the scoring.
Downey pitched one and a third innings for SU. She allowed seven runs, five earned on five hits. She was relieved in the second inning by BIG EAST Player of the Year Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J.). Switenko tossed the remaining three and two-thirds innings. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out two.
Tracie Adix pitched all five innings for DePaul to improve 12-8. She surrendered just the one hit and fanned two.
Sheaks was 2-for-3 at the plate with five runs batted in for the Blue Demons. Blagaich also went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Secka scored three times and was 1-for-2.
DePaul will play either No. 1 seed Louisville or No. 8 seed St. John’s in the semifinal round.
Syracuse will learn its postseason fate on Sunday, May 14 when the 64-team field for the NCAA Regionals is announced. The selection announcement will be televised live on ESPNews at 3:30 p.m.
