Varsity Eight Wins Petite Final at Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, MASS.- The Syracuse University men’s rowing team competed in the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass. on Sunday with its eighth-ranked varsity eight winning the petite final. The varsity eight was sent to the petite final after losing a photo finish to the nation’s top ranked crew, Princeton, and #10 Yale earlier in the day. Princeton came across the finish line first in a time of 5:59.547 with Yale in second at 5:59.782 and the Orange in third at 5:59.971. SU’s second varsity eight finished third in the second varsity petite final, while the freshman eight finished first in the third level final in the freshman division.
The varsity eight won the petite final in a time of 6:20.682 with Cornell finishing in second and Navy in third. The varsity eight’s loss in the morning heat was the first time all spring that it was not the first boat to cross the finish line.
The second varsity eight placed third in the petite finals with a time of 6:42.714. Boston and Cornell each finished ahead of the Orange in the race. Northeastern won Syracuse’s morning heat with Princeton finishing second. The Orange was a little more than six seconds behind the top two boats finishing in a time of 6:20.974. Northeastern posted a time of 6:13.612 in its first place effort.
The freshman eight won the third final by beating Dartmouth, MIT and Columbia with a time of 6:35.117. In the morning heat, Northeastern snuck out a victory with Wisconsin finishing second. The Orange took fifth in a time of 6:19.816 in the first race.
Syracuse will next be in action June 1-3 when it competes in the I.R.A. Regatta in Camden, N.J.
