OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Orange senior shortstop/pitcher Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J.) became the first Syracuse softball player to earn All-America honors on Wednesday, May 31. Switenko was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-America Second Team by the NFCA coaching representatives. The representatives named 18 players to each of three teams.
Switenko was selected to the second team as an at-large choice after helping the Orange to a school-record 36 victories and its second consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Championship. The honor is the latest for Switenko, who earlier this month was tabbed the 2006 BIG EAST Player of the Year and was picked to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Northeast Region First Team.
Switenko had arguably the best offensive year in school history in 2006, setting SU season records for batting average (.393), runs scored (42), hits (64), homers (15), runs batted in (44), total bases (121), slugging percentage (.742) and on-base percentage (.471). She led the BIG EAST in home runs, total bases and slugging and tied for second in the conference in batting average.
In the circle, Switenko posted a 16-3 overall record and led the Orange with a 2.24 earned run average. Her 16 victories ranked fourth on SU’s single-season chart. She pitched four shutouts and struck out 105 batters in 130 and two-thirds innings.
Switenko finished her career as SU’s all-time leader in games played (203), games started (203), slugging percentage (.570), home runs (38), runs batted in (132), total bases (340), walks (74) and ranks in the top three in virtually every other individual offensive category.
Switenko was one of three BIG EAST players to earn 2006 All-America recognition. Notre Dame’s Stephanie Brown and Lacy Wood of Louisville were picked to the third team.
