
Men's Lacrosse to Face Harvard in NCAA First Round

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team will face Harvard in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, May 14, at 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised by ESPNU. The Orange earned its 24th consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament by virtue of an 8-4 regular-season record. SU won its last seven games of the year to earn the No. 5 seed in this year’s 16-team postseason playoff picture.
It will be the first playoff meeting between Syracuse and Harvard and the 18th meeting overall. The Orange is 17-0 against the Crimson all-time. The last time these two teams met was April 6, 1985 in Cambridge where the Orange won a 13-9 decision.
Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, May 9, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Carrier Dome Box Office. SU students and youth (12 and under) tickets are $3; adult tickets are $7. Syracuse 2006 men’s lacrosse season ticket holders can purchase their tickets starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday up until Friday, May 12, at 4:30 p.m. Season parking passes will be honored. Otherwise, parking will be $5 the day of the game. There will be no advance sale of parking passes. The Carrier Dome gates are scheduled to open at 6 p.m. on game day. Harvard posted a 6-6 record this season and went 3-3 in the competitive Ivy League. Its biggest wins of the season came against NCAA Tournament participants Pennsylvania (13-8) and Denver (8-7). The Crimson lost its last two games of the season to Hofstra and Dartmouth.
The winner of the Syracuse vs. Harvard game will play the winner of Johns Hopkins vs. Pennsylvania in the quarterfinals at Stony Brook, NY on May 20. The defending national champion Blue Jays earned the No. 4 seed in this year’s tournament. Syracuse lost a 14-9 decision to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on March 18.
This is the third time the Orange has earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. SU was seeded fifth in 1991 and 1996 and advanced to the national semifinals on both occasions.
This will be Syracuse’s 27th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 24th consecutive. The Orange first qualified in 1979 and made it again in 1980 and 1981, but missed the 1982 tournament. Since 1983, Syracuse has participated every year.
The Orange owns an NCAA Tournament record of 51-17 to rank second in all-time tournament winning percentage (.750). Princeton, who is seeded No. 7 in this year’s tournament, owns the best winning percentage (.757) in tournament play.
Syracuse has won nine NCAA Championships (1983, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 2000, 2002, 2004) and appeared in 14 title games. John Desko has guided the Orange to a 17-4 record in postseason play since he took over as head coach in 1999. The team has won its last three championships under Desko (2000, 2002 and 2004) and qualified for the national semifinals from 1999-2004, advancing to the title game five times during that stretch.
The 2006 NCAA semifinals and finals will be contested at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on May 27 and 29.
