SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Nine Syracuse student-athletes have been named to the list of 2006 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars, announced in the April 6 issue of Diverse magazine. Six track and field student-athletes made the list and a student-athlete from football, volleyball, and men’s soccer were also honored.
To be considered, student-athletes must have had a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
Among the first team honorees is senior Tommy Harris (Daytona Beach, Fla.), who started at outside linebacker last season for the Orange. He racked up 45 tackles in 2005, including 29 solo stops, and two tackles for a loss. Harris earned his undergraduate degree in information management and is pursuing his master’s in information studies.
Men’s soccer and volleyball both had a student-athlete make the list. Junior Marcel Laniado (Miami, Fla.) and senior Kelly Duan (Baotou City, China) were named to their respective sport’s second team. Laniado appeared in one game for the Orange on the pitch in 2005 and is majoring in economics and finance. Duan set the single-season kills record in 2005 with 537. Her 4.26 kills per game average was just off the single-season record held by Dana Fiume, who averaged 4.27 kills in 2000. Duan was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection and was named to the AVCA All-Northeast Team. She also garnered AVCA All-America Honorable Mention accolades. Duan will receive her degree in accounting and finance.
The Orange track and field team landed six student-athletes on the list, including junior Sheron Mark (Diego Martin, Trinidad), who was named to the first team as a biochemistry major. She is coming off the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championship where she set the Syracuse record in the triple jump at 12.99m. She finished second in the triple jump and also placed second in the long jump. Joining Mark on the first team is junior Justin Frazier (Hackensack, N.J.), who is majoring in accounting and marketing management.
Senior Tatiana Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was selected to the second team as an exercise science major. At the BIG EAST Championship, she finished third in the triple and long jump behind Mark.
Rounding out the track and field selections is junior Candace Ince (Port of Spain, Trinidad), sophomore Dong Woo Shin (Junction City, Ore.), and senior Joshua Johnson (Columbia, S.C.), who were all named to the third team. Ince is majoring in psychology and Shin is majoring in industrial and interaction design. Johnson is majoring in information management.
